Theory of charge asymmetric electrolytes. Onsager’s approach revisited

نویسندگان

چکیده

Onsager made corrections to the Poisson–Boltzmann equation, more correctly describe interactions in asymmetric electrolytes (those which have different charges, absolute value, for cation and anion). The equations established by allow calculation of symmetric total correlation functions, such that hij(r)=hji(r). In this article it has been shown these describing particular electrolytes, can also be deduced from Ornstein Zernicke integral considering a nonlinear closure relation HNC type. excess free energy functions found similar obtained Mayer’s theory. Relations with electrostatic association models on one hand, dressed ions theory other are recovered.

Polarization effects of dielectric nanoparticles in aqueous charge-asymmetric electrolytes.

Small nanoparticles, globular proteins, viral capsids, and other nanoscopic biomolecules usually display dielectric properties that are different from those of the medium in which they are dispersed. These dielectric heterogeneities can significantly influence the surrounding ion distribution, which determines the self-assembly and colloidal stability of these nanoparticles in solution. Here, w...

Universality of ionic criticality: size- and charge-asymmetric electrolytes.

Grand-canonical simulations designed to resolve critical universality classes are reported for z:1 hard-core electrolyte models with diameter ratios lambda=a+/a- less than or approximately equal 6. For z=1 Ising-type behavior prevails. Unbiased estimates of Tc(lambda) are within 1% of previous (biased) estimates but the critical densities are approximately 5% lower. Ising character is also esta...

Charge neutrality breakdown in confined aqueous electrolytes: Theory and simulation.

We study, using Density Functional theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo simulations, aqueous electrolyte solutions between charged infinite planar surfaces, in contact with a bulk salt reservoir. In agreement with recent experimental observations [Z. Luo et al., Nat. Commun. 6, 6358 (2015)], we find that the confined electrolyte lacks local charge neutrality. We show that a DFT based on a bulk-HNC expa...

Lattice-gas Poisson-Boltzmann approach for sterically asymmetric electrolytes.

We derive a modification of the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation brought about by the finite and different sizes of mobile ions. The equation we obtain contains explicitly the size asymmetry of the electrolyte, enabling one to apply the PB approach to the cases where this effect may be of importance. We show that the modification we propose predicts the asymmetry of the double-layer capacitance....

Space Charge Effects in the Electrolytes

Interfacial polarization in electrolytes or other ionic media is a very well known phenomenon in the connection to the relative surface potential difference. Nevertheless, the created space charge affects the distribution of charge carriers in the electrolyte itself similarly to the field effects in semiconductors. This results in the number of secondary effects from the dielectrophoresis to th...
